Introduction To The Recumbent Exercise Bikes

I initially starting using recumbent bikes because I injured my knee, and still wanted to stay active and healthy. Now, I spend time looking for the best recumbent bikes to share them with you. In this review, we’ll describe the reasons why these bikes are so beneficial, and a few of the best types of recumbent bikes in this recumbent bike guide and review.

In this review, we’ll describe the reasons why these bikes are so beneficial, and a few of the best types of recumbent bikes in this recumbent bike guide and review.

Very few people would tell you that they thought that recumbent bikes were the same as regular exercise bikes- because they aren’t. Instead, most people would say that recumbent bikes provided a unique, individualistic approach to riding that really made the experience better for them.

That’s why it’s so important to do all the research first hand- to make sure you get the right bike from the very beginning so that you can make the most of your experience with your new exercise bike

How To Choose The Best Recumbent Bike

Ultimately, when you pick the perfect recumbent bike for you, there are a lot of factors that play into your decision. There are a ton of bikes on the market, and it’s hard to find the perfect one to fit your needs. There are a lot of features that these bikes have as well- so decide what’s important to you now before you actually start looking at exercise bikes:

Best Price for You

Like anything else, the quality and design of a bike will depend on the bike. You’re going to get what you pay for.

If you plan on using it all the time, we suggest springing for a more expensive model. If you haven’t ever used the machine, go ahead a purchase a lesser model. Most models go on sale at some point, and that’s the point to act and make a purchase.

Better Seat Design

You’ll learn as you look at recumbent bikes how important this feature is. You’re expected to exercise for thirty to forty-five minute periods of time, so the seat design is pretty important.

Recumbent bikes are known for having some of the most comfortable seats out there, but only when you choose models with good back support. It keeps your back from hurting while ensuring that you aren’t leaning forward too much and putting a lot of pressure on your wrists.

Consoles, Displays, and Programming Features

Most bikes have dramatically different consoles. The cheapest ones only tell you the distance that you traveled, how long you Biked that are centered above the mechanics provide the best center of gravity for your stability.

Some models have extra leg weight or balances that help keep the machine steady and how many calories that you burn (which would be fine for people who are just starting) while more robust versions have the ability to program users in, choose features, and monitor how well you’re doing. Higher priced bikes give you the most features, but you don’t have to have them.

Bike Stability (you must test before you buy)

Recumbent bikes are the safest piece of equipment out there. Most of the time, the only injuries occur when the machine is tipped over, or when people operate them incorrectly. A screwdriver may help to tighten the bike.

When bike seats are lower and too reclined, you might have to worry about stability. Bikes that are centered above the mechanics provide the best center of gravity for your stability. Some models have extra leg weight or balances that help keep the machine steady.

Other Features to Consider

Realistically, there are a lot of things to consider when you’re picking the right bike for your needs.

You should consider factors like the brand name, how much resistance it offers you, the style of the machine, the size of the machine, and how hard it will be for you to carry or transport. It’s important to keep these factors in mind because they play into your enjoyment of your actual machine.

Recommended Product Reviews

We’ve included ten of our favorite recumbent bikes in this article: “Best Recumbent Bike – Guide and Reviews.” That will help you come to a conclusion on which model is right for you.

1.Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike

Exerpeutic 900XL Extended Capacity Recumbent Bike

The Exerputic 900XL is a great option for people that aren’t looking to spend an arm and a let on their recumbent bike.

If you’re new to biking on a machine and don’t know where to begin, we believe that this bike is a great starter point. It’s got a very basic LCD screen that lets you read your calories burned, distance tracked and your heart rate information. It also has eight different traction levels to make sure that you’re getting a great workout.

The Exerputic 900XL is pretty easy to assemble (as long as you’re patient) and sturdy enough to last. It’s quiet and the eight resistance settings give you plenty of room to get better at what you’re doing on the bike.

You can watch TV, attach a workstation, and even write while you’re biking, highlighting the stability that you get when you’re using these exercise machines. The display is very simple, but you really don’t need much more than it offers. It doesn’t need any batteries or plug-ins. Just get on and ride!

Feature at a glance

  • Heart rate monitoring
  • 8 different levels of magnetic resistance
  • Extended leg stabilizers
  • Large pedal design with straps
  • Transport wheels mobility
  • 300 pounds weight capacity

Unfortunately, the seat isn’t as comfortable as other models. We just threw a pillow on the seat and it worked just fine.

2.Nautilus R614 Recumbent Bike

Nautilus R614 Recumbent Bike

The Nautilus R614 Recumbent is just like other bikes that you’d see at the gym- it’s got a highly functional LCD screen, lots of programs and resistance, and a slightly higher price tag than the Exerputic 900XL.

What we really noticed about this model are the vented seats, flexible design, ergonomic handlebars, speakers and fan that this model offers.

The position that this recumbent bike takes minimizes the impact that you feel on your joints. This is an important consideration when buying any exercise equipment.

The Nautilus is super quiet, allowing you to enjoy listening to television, your music, or just focusing on your workout. There look to be a lot of washers and pieces in the box, but it’s all pretty easy to put together, which is important.

The frame is sturdy and very heavy, but it has wheels attached to the base that helps you move it around wherever you need it. The seat is very comfortable, despite not appearing to be padded well.

The Nautilus R614 has plenty of workout programs (22 in total, 9 profile programs, 8 heart rate, 2 fitness tests, and 2 custom exercises). The rubber straps are pretty small for bigger feet, and the handle on the bike is huge, even for big hands.

Feature at a glance

  • Dual Track LCD System
  • Better quality sound
  • Adjustable Seat
  • Transport wheel for movement

Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of instructions included on how to use the bike, but we found it pretty self-explanatory.

3.Marcy ME 709 Recumbent Exercise Bike

Marcy ME 709 Recumbent Exercise Bike

Marcy ME 709 was one of the first strongman pioneering fitness back in the 30s, and he’s passing on his knowledge to you in this recumbent exercise bike.

It’s one of the best recumbent bikes because it’s inexpensive, sturdy (even for people around 400 pounds in weight), and simple to operate.

The foot pedals are a little small but with a little adjustment, this bike will work perfectly for any size of a person. It’s pretty affordable, and it has a lot of the same kinds of features that you’d look for in a more expensive bike.

The adjustable resistance is easy to use and operate. The tension options are magnetic, which makes the adjustment quick and easy. The simple workout metrics counter gives you exactly what you need: speed, distance, and how many calories you’ve burned.

The seat is very wide, providing stability. Unfortunately, the seat isn’t all that comfortable. We used a towel that’s folded up, and it seems to provide enough support to help us get through our workouts. The design is impressively compact for any sized living arrangements. Other models can be bulky and hard to move.

Feature at a glance

  • Adjustable Seat
  • Smooth & Quite Magnetic Resistance
  • 8-level resistant adjustments
  • Handle for support
  • Pedals with adjustable straps
  • Transport wheels

It’s easy to use, especially for those who are a little bit older and are unsteady on their feet. You can’t be the price. Marcy products are some of the most affordable recumbent bikes on the net.

4.Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike

Schwinn 230 Recumbent Bike

If the Marcy ME 709 was a little old fashioned for you, this Schwinn 230 model has a feature that is pretty invaluable- a USB charge hub.

While the price tag is a little higher, most people believe that Schwinn models are the best recumbent bikes out there.

It’s got extra features to enjoy, like having a small fan and speakers attached. The seat is hard plastic (instead of being padded) so make sure that you pad your seat.

It’s very easy to switch from one resistance setting to the next. The electrical LCD is easy to use and performs well under pressure (when you’re tired from all of that pedaling).

I recommend using the personal settings on the Schwinn 230 because it helped get us more motivated to work out. It stores your weight, height and workout patterns to formulate the best way for you to burn the most calories.

It’s pretty easy to get everything put together, even if you don’t have a whole lot of experience putting these kinds of equipment together. The holes all fit together well without struggling or straining to make things fit. You can set “goals” to achieve, such as a time goal, a calorie goal, or an overall distance goal.

Feature at a glance

  • Schwinn Dual Track™ two LCD window system
  • 3 LED tracking lights
  • 22 programs
  • Schwinn Connect functionality to track your progress
  • 2 user settings
  • USB charging port
  • 3-speed fan
  • High-quality speaker

I did a little research and found out that Schwinn seats can be changed easily between models. The Schwinn 270 seat is much more padded at comes at about the same cost.

5.Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike

Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike

When you’re looking for a fancy technological bike upgrade, the Schwinn 270 is for you. It’s got a fancy 2 display LCD screen that can put up information for 13 different displays and it’s got 25 levels of resistance (the most of any recumbent bikes listed here).

It’s got a fancy 2 display LCD screen that can put up information for 13 different displays and it’s got 25 levels of resistance (the most of any recumbent bikes listed here).

We love the USB charge port and how you can exchange data, and how many programs can be entered on the system. Most of the monitors on other devices can only track 1 or 2 profiles, but this Schwinn has 4.

Much more flexibility and functionality all in one place

The speaker quality is much better than the 230. It’s fairly compact for all of the features, and the price seems to match it. More comfortable and better design than the cheaper version.

Feature at a glance

  • 25 level resistance
  • Tablet Holder
  • Bottle Holder
  • Built in speakers
  • Grip heart rate monitor
  • 4 user profiles make it ideal for family use.

Our floors were a little uneven, so we had to adjust the base a little to make it work better. Luckily, this model is completely adjustable.

6.Sunny Health & Fitness Folding Recumbent Bike

Sunny Health & Fitness Folding Recumbent Bike

There aren’t a lot of models of the recumbent bike the Sunny Health and Fitness. It’s super easy to use, and the seats are highly adjustable.

The downfalls of the design are pretty obvious- it’s so lightweight and flexible that it only “supports” 220 pounds. With eight tension levels, you get a range of exercise and the portability that you need.

While the seat is uncomfortable, it’s easy to put together. It’s easier to use than most models, and as long as you’re careful, the weight limit isn’t a problem.

Feature at a glance

  • 8 magnetic resistance levels
  • LCD screen displays
  • Track your workout progress
  • Easy to use

Unfortunately, this bike isn’t well suited for shorter people.

7.Velocity Exercise Dual Motion Recumbent Bike

Velocity Exercise Dual Motion Recumbent Bike

Velocity Exercise Dual Motion Recumbent bikes have specific characteristics, like looking futuristic and trendy. This model doesn’t disappoint, in that regard.

Several of my friends got this style of bike, and they’re happy with the fact that it supports people with low upper body strength. One of them suffered a relatively serious accident and had to start exercising. Because of the unique design of this particular Velocity recumbent bike, my friend could get up and down off of this bike when they couldn’t on other models.

It doesn’t squeak and it’s easy to put together, what more could you ask for? It’s incredibly easy to build and assemble. I had all the parts fit together within 40 minutes, and fit the bike easily in its allotted space.

The bike is as easy to use as possible and seems to work well in tight, cramped spots. The bike works very quietly; I added just a little bit of WD-40 to the sprocket and it worked great.

Feature at a glance

  • Sturdy Frame
  • Magnetic tension has 8 levels
  • Hand bar grips for heart rate monitoring
  • Well balanced flywheel 5k
  • LCD display
  • Tracking your workout progress

The instructions aren’t perfect but it’s easy enough to figure out what you’re doing.

8.Exerpeutic 4000 Magnetic Recumbent Bike with MyCloudFitness App

Exerpeutic-4000-Magnetic-Recumbent-Bike-with-MyCloudFitness-App

When you’re looking for a balance between affordability and functionality, you’ll find that the Exerpeutic 4000 Magnetic Recumbent Bike has a ton of great features and an unbeatable, breathable comfortable “air soft” seat.

It’s over-sized (about 3 inches thick) to help reduce your pain and discomfort when exercising. The mobile app capabilities let you use mobile apps, Bluetooth functionalities, or tracking software that lets you make the most of your workout right on your recumbent bike.

The monitor is simple and streamlined, and it’s hard to hit the wrong button when you’re working hard.

It’s hard to find a “comfortable” recumbent bike, and there’s a good chance that you’re going to be spending a lot of time riding it. The super comfortable seat and smooth pedal action keep you riding for long periods of time.

You aren’t limited to viewing your information on just the Exerpeutic’s monitor; you can see it on your phone or tablet, too. There are a bunch of applications that come with your purchase. One of these apps lets you even watch the street level of the area that you’re “riding through” on Google Maps.

If you have any issues, the customer support is fantastic. I had to have a strap fixed for my right foot pedal, and I believe that their service is unparalleled because I received the strap within 3 or 4 days.

Feature at a glance

  • 12 programs
  • 4 individual settings
  • 7 training styles
  • Built-in Bluetooth
  • LCD window system
  • Heart rate monitoring
  • 24 tension level magnetic resistance
  • Quality and reliable flywheel

If you’re looking for a ton of settings, the 4000 model doesn’t disappoint. You’ll get over 24 settings and 12 workout programs.

9.Velocity Exercise CHB-R2101 Magnetic Recumbent Bike

The Velocity Exercise CHB-R2101 Magnetic recumbent bike is one of the most affordable models out there for people that know that they won’t use their bike a lot, but want to use it moderately (about 30 minutes at a time) and still get a workout.

It’s highly affordable, and it has a relatively comfortable seat, and a whisper quiet performance like you would expect on a recumbent bike.

It’s not “the best recumbent bike on the market” but it does have the best price tag and a few redeeming factors.

The CHB-R2101 comes with a 5-year limited warranty that helps make sure that you’re getting the exercise you need for the value, without having to worry about quality.

It’s sturdy and doesn’t wobble around when you’re riding it on the highest settings.

The Velocity bike is great for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money on high-tech models before they’ve experimented. It’s perfect for people in between a workout regimen, just starting to get fit on a limited budget.

Feature at a glance

  • 8 resistance levels
  • A large console
  • Transport wheels

I recommend taking some Velcro strips and attaching them to your iPod or mobile phone to get the full experience that some more expensive models provide.

10.Exerpeutic 400XL Folding Recumbent Bike

Exerpeutic-400XL-Folding-Recumbent-Bike

When space is of the essence, look no further than the Exerpeutic 400XL Folding Recumbent Bike Folding Recumbent Bike.

It cuts out all the extra gear that takes up space (forward facing handles and displays that add bulk), fitting your exercise equipment in a space less than 2 feet wide (19 inches).

It’s not a slouch either, it’s got 8 adjustable settings, a heart rate monitor, calorie information, and distance, time, and speed trackers.

The design is called “semi-recumbent,” which means that it has a great seat and backrest, but it’s also easy to get off of as well. which is important in these kinds of exercise bikes.

Supports a great amount of weight (up to 300 pounds or more in some circumstances).

The bike folds in two and utilizes a unique transmission system that delivers movement evenly and provides a smooth ride. It’s one of the only recumbent models that you can fold up and put in the closet when you’re done with it.

It’s easy to use, and the settings keep you working because there is enough resistance between each level. I recommend taking more time with the tensions between 4-5 because they’re fairly difficult and can be performed for a long duration of time.

Feature at a glance

  • 8 levels Magnetic tension control system
  • LCD display with workout progress tracking system
  • Semi-recumbent design
  • Transport wheels
  • Precision-balanced flywheel

Unfortunately, if you’re exceptionally tall (over 6’5″) you might have a hard time fitting on the machine.

Final Verdict

Without a doubt, the biggest reason that I don’t go to the gym is because I don’t want to socialize, or because I don’t have time during my busy day. With my knee injury however, I have to stay active and keep moving or I’ll have problems walking later. While buying exercise equipment is the obvious solution, it isn’t always smart or easy to stay fit and active. There are a ton of options on the web to find exercise equipment, but it isn’t always “good equipment.” Through trial and error, we’ve found the best recumbent bikes for the money- and we’re always glad to share our research with you.
